Buying Cotton Quilts and Bedspreads from India: A Buyer’s Specification Guide
A practical guide for retailers and importers sourcing cotton quilts and bedspreads from India, covering shell fabric, filling, quilting construction, dimensions, sampling, quality checks and packaging.
Start with the intended product and construction
The words quilt, bedspread and coverlet can describe different weights, constructions and uses. Before requesting prices, define the end use, climate, retail positioning and required appearance. A lightweight decorative bedspread may use a different filling, stitch pattern and packing method from a warmer quilt intended as a functional bedding layer.
Specify shell fabric and filling separately
- Shell: state the fibre composition, weave, fabric weight, finish and colour. If the product is reversible, specify both faces.
- Filling: identify the fibre type, recycled or virgin status where relevant, target weight per square metre or per piece, and required hand feel.
- Quilting: provide the stitch pattern, quilted area, stitch density or spacing, and acceptable variation from the approved sample.
- Binding and edging: specify binding material, width, colour, corner construction and seam requirements.
- Labels: confirm fibre-content wording, care information, country-of-origin marking and buyer-specific label artwork.
Dimensions, weight and tolerances
Provide finished measurements for each size and define how the quilt will be measured. Include allowable tolerances for length, width, filling distribution and overall weight. State whether dimensions are measured before or after washing or conditioning, where relevant. Do not use one generic tolerance for every component: the buyer should define acceptance limits for the shell, fill and finished article.
Sampling and approval sequence
- Share a technical pack with reference photos, drawings, fabric composition, filling details, size chart and construction notes.
- Review fabric and colour swatches before the first complete sample where colour or surface texture is important.
- Assess the full sample for dimensions, weight, hand feel, quilting, filling distribution, seams, binding and packaging method.
- Record comments in a sample approval sheet and identify the final approved reference.
- Confirm whether a pre-production sample or top-of-production sample is required before the bulk run.
Quality checks for quilt production
Inspection should compare production with the approved specification, not with a general visual impression. The appropriate plan depends on construction, order value and buyer risk.
- Check shell fabric composition and visible defects against agreed standards.
- Measure finished dimensions and check overall weight or filling distribution where specified.
- Inspect stitch continuity, quilting alignment, seam strength, edge binding and loose threads.
- Review shade consistency, stains, holes, needle damage and workmanship defects.
- Verify care labels, fibre declarations, folding, polybag or alternative packing and carton marks.
MOQ, costing and lead-time considerations
Quilt pricing is affected by fabric type, shell weight, filling material, quilting complexity, dimensions, order quantity, print or dye minimums, finishing and packaging. MOQ may differ for fabric procurement, colour, print, filling and finished goods. Ask suppliers to separate the cost drivers and to state which assumptions are included in the quotation. A quoted lead time should also distinguish material procurement, sampling, bulk production and packing.
Export packing and buyer documentation
Define the folded dimensions, individual pack, inserts, barcode placement, carton quantity, carton dimensions, gross/net weight and shipping marks. If the product is compressed or vacuum packed, approve the method and check recovery after unpacking. The importer should approve final label content and confirm destination-market requirements before production release.
Questions buyers should ask a quilt supplier
- Which quilting and filling processes are performed in-house and which are subcontracted?
- Can the supplier control filling distribution and finished weight consistently across sizes?
- What is the MOQ by shell fabric, colour, print and finished product?
- Which tests or inspections can be arranged for this product and destination market?
- Can the supplier provide a pre-production sample and document the approved construction?
