Sourcing Curtains and Window Textiles from India: Buyer Specification Guide

How to source curtains and window textiles from India, including fabric, opacity, dimensions, heading styles, lining, colour, shrinkage, stitching, labels, sampling and inspection.

Define the window treatment and how it will be used

Curtains, drapes, sheers, valances and other window textiles have different constructions and functional expectations. State whether the item is decorative, privacy-focused, light-filtering or intended to provide a specific level of room darkening. The supplier needs the intended use to assess fabric weight, lining, opacity and construction.

Fabric selection and construction

  • Fibre composition and percentages for the face fabric, lining and any interlining.
  • Weave, print, fabric weight, width, texture and finishing treatment.
  • Opacity or light-filtering target, with a sample or agreed test method if a performance claim is important.
  • Colour standard, print repeat, pattern direction and acceptable shade variation.
  • Lining material, colour, attachment method and any care requirements.

Measurements and heading style

Provide the finished curtain width and drop, with clear measuring points and tolerances. State whether the width is the flat panel width or the intended installed coverage. Specify the heading style, such as eyelet, tab top, pencil pleat, pinch pleat or rod pocket, and provide the finished header dimensions and hardware details. If the buyer requires a pair, clarify whether measurements and pricing are per panel or per pair.

Trims, hems and workmanship

Define hem depth, side hems, header tape, eyelet size and material, hooks, rings, tabs, tiebacks and any decorative trim. State the required stitch type and finish. For patterned fabrics, show how the print repeat should align across panels. The sample should be checked for drape, hang, colour, construction and the way the finished product is packed.

Sampling and testing considerations

  • Review face fabric, lining and colour swatches before full sample production.
  • Approve one complete panel or pair with the actual heading and trims.
  • Measure width, drop, hems, header and pattern placement against the technical pack.
  • Evaluate shrinkage or dimensional stability using an agreed care or wash procedure.
  • Where applicable, confirm whether the buyer needs flame-retardancy, lightfastness or other performance testing for the intended market and use. Do not assume a generic fabric certificate covers the finished curtain.

Inspection checklist

  • Correct face fabric, lining, fibre composition and colour.
  • Finished panel dimensions, pair matching and pattern alignment.
  • Straight hems, secure header tape, consistent pleats and even stitching.
  • Eyelets, hooks, tabs and accessories are complete and secure.
  • No stains, holes, pulled yarns, print defects or visible finishing damage.
  • Correct care label, pack configuration, barcode and carton information.

MOQ, pricing and shipping

Curtain price depends on fabric width and weight, lining, heading construction, trims, print or dye minimums, panel dimensions, embellishment, packaging and quantity. Custom fabric or print may have a different MOQ from finished panels. Agree how panels are folded, whether accessories are included and how the curtain is protected from crease, moisture and transit damage.

Avoid these specification gaps

  • Quoting a price without explaining whether it is per panel or per pair.
  • Leaving installed width, fullness and finished drop undefined.
  • Not specifying lining, opacity or heading hardware.
  • Approving a fabric swatch without approving the full finished curtain.
  • Leaving destination-specific safety or performance checks until after bulk production.
