Throws and Woven Blankets from India: Product Development Guide
Guide to sourcing throws and woven blankets from India, including fibre, weave, weight, texture, dimensions, fringe, finishing, sampling, colour and inspection.
Choose the intended product and hand feel
Throws and woven blankets may be decorative layers, lightweight covers or warmer functional products. Define the end use, retail positioning, season, texture and drape. A cotton waffle throw, a woven blanket and a heavier brushed product have different yarn, construction and finishing requirements.
Specify fibre, yarn and construction
- Fibre composition and percentage for the main body, fringe and any decorative yarn.
- Yarn type, count or thickness and whether the yarn is dyed before weaving.
- Weave structure, pattern, texture, jacquard or dobby details.
- Target finished weight, dimensions and tolerances.
- Finishing process, brushing, washing, softening or other treatment, where applicable.
- Edge, hem, binding, fringe and corner requirements.
Colour and pattern control
Provide a physical colour standard or approved yarn shade and define the pattern repeat and placement. For multi-colour designs, specify colour order, stripe width, check size or jacquard artwork. Approve the sample in the actual material and finish; a digital image cannot confirm hand feel, drape, texture or colour under different lighting.
Sampling and performance review
- Approve yarn and colour references before the full sample where possible.
- Measure the sample and confirm finished dimensions and weight.
- Review drape, hand feel, texture, edge finish, fringe security and surface appearance.
- Carry out wash, shrinkage or colourfastness checks if required by the buyer’s specification.
- Approve the final fold and pack configuration before bulk production.
Quality inspection points
- Correct fibre and construction details.
- Weight and size within agreed tolerances.
- No broken yarns, holes, pulled threads, stains or unacceptable surface defects.
- Fringe, tassels, hems and bindings are secure and consistent.
- Colour and pattern placement match the approved reference within allowed variation.
- Care label, retail pack, carton quantity and shipping marks are correct.
Pricing and MOQ considerations
Cost depends on yarn fibre, yarn type, weave complexity, weight, dimensions, colour count, finishing, fringe or tassels, and order quantity. Custom colour and pattern may require a yarn-dye or loom minimum. Ask for separate sample and bulk pricing, and confirm whether quoted weight includes fringe or added trims.
Questions to ask the manufacturer
- Which weaving processes and finished blanket constructions are available?
- Can the supplier meet the target weight and dimensions consistently?
- What are the minimums by colour, pattern and size?
- What finishing and wash checks can be arranged?
- How will the sample and production reference be retained for repeat orders?
